STUDIO ONE SILK SCREENS
Sometime in the 1970s Coxsone Dodd must have found a friend or the son of a friend or a cousin or somebody who convinced him to do limited runs of silkscreen album covers. During that period, many classic Studio One LPs were simply re-printed as silk screens while many other LPs were printed up with the Silk Screen effect seemingly being used as a design element in itself. I have always been facinated with these Silk Screen covers and thought I'd share a bunch of examples with alla you.

NY WHITE LABEL REMIX STYLE  In the 90s and into the mid 2000s, you could walk into any of the NY record stores like Beat Street or Rock & Soul on a Tuesday and find a line of DJs waiting on line for the White Label Hip Hop/ Reggae remixes that were hitting the market. The hottest of these remixes would come into the store on a Tuesday and be gone forever by Wednesday. These tunes ran the clubs seamlesly blending the new Dancehall hits with a hip hop flavor that got the massive jumping. In time these type of tunes would be called Mash-ups and in light of Serrato and the like, these type of pressings just dried right up and all these underground and unknown remixers either disappeared or went direct to the net...So in a nostalgic memory of when DJs could actually find the hot remixes on WAX check our special on NY WHITE LABEL REMIX STYLE

HOT OFF THE PRESSES!!! DEADLY DRAGON SOUND SKA TO ROCKSTEADY Deadly Dragon Sound – Ska to RockSteady First came YEAR OF THE GUN. Next up was DEADLY DRAGON INNA SINGJAY STYLEE. Now Deadly Dragon Sound takes on the Foundation of Jamaican music with the new CD: DEADLY DRAGON – SKA TO ROCK STEADY.
In the 1960s, Ska music developed as the sound of Jamaica celebrating its independence from the United Kingdom. Record labels like Studio One, Duke Reid, Randys, Prince Buster and Top Deck pumped out records on a weekly basis expanding the stripped down beats of early ska into a dense patois of musical expression that rivals American Be-Bop for pure creativity…As the 60s progressed the initial joy of independence began to darken as the harsh economic realities of the post-colonial period began to come to light. Following this change in mood, the Ska music began slow down, to get more dread and finally morphed into the soul-inflected sound of Rock Steady.
Be it hard instrumentals, lover’s laments or rough-neck chants, the toughest tunes were always aimed at one group – the RUDE BWOYS, the tough inner-city youth with no jobs, not much hope and the desire to make some serious noise before their time was done…..
It is to the spirit of these RUDE BWOYS that we dedicate DEADLY DRAGON – SKA TO ROCKSTEADY—Yes indeed we dug deep into the vaults to find the most serious 45s and even a few Dub Plates to create a fluid mix that draws out the deep dread and millatancy of 60s Jamaican Music.
So alla you Rude Bwoys get ready for this here Scorcher! DEADLY DRAGON – SKA TO ROCKSTEADY covers 57 wicked pieces of vinyl (no blood-claat cds or Serrato) mixed live and in real time with two turntables, a mixer and some effects -- NO overdubs, NO computer edits– just rude-bwoy music mixed in a rude-bwoy style for the massive dem!

We are pleased to offer the DEADLY DRAGON SOUND BOX Yes -- this incredible ANALOG machine was hand made in Japan and features siren like sound modulations -- it has a flange to modulate the speed of the effects and when you hook this baby up to a delay or echo unit -- BEWARE! Your session will be pure MURDER!!! Seriously though...this is one hell of a toy and the organic, slightly chaotic sound is a plus for any sound system.
